Dr. Dre Is Working On A Marvin Gaye Movie

Marvin Gaye is an OG of The Culture, He created some of the most iconic soul and R&B music of all-time and was also socially conscious. He has a truly amazing story perfect for the big screen. It’s been a struggle however to create that epic motion picture. Many in Hollywood have tried from F. Gary Gray to Jamie Foxx to even James Gandolfini have given it a go but to no avail.

But who better than another OG of The Culture to come in and finally make it happen? Enter Dr. Dre fresh off his own mega-successful biopic Straight Outta Compton (which he co-produced) is now officially working on the Marvin Gaye project. Dre and his team have already cleared two of the biggest hurdles by securing the rights to Gaye’s music and getting the OK from Gaye’s family.

Things are still early but this is looking to be the best opportunity yet to get a Marvin Gaye biopic out to The Culture and we’re excited. Oh and of course we’ll keep you posted!

And #funfact: Dre is represented by the King, Holmes, Paterno & Soriano law firm, the same firm that repped Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams when they were sued by the Gaye estate in the “Blurred Lines” trial in 2015. The Gaye family contended that “Blurred Lines” infringed on Gaye’s 1977 hit “Got to Give It Up” and ended up winning millions of dollars in statutory damages. It’s a small world after all.
