Quick Hits: More Insecure, End of Childish Gambino, Queen Cicely Gets An Oscar And More

This week was another busy week in news and accomplishments for many creators for The Culture so here are some quick hits highlighting some of the things you might’ve missed.

Because they recognize talent and they like money, HBO has renewed Issa Rae’s Insecure for a 4th season and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Ballers for a 5th season insuring two of the most critically acclaimed shows led by a black female and male respectively will continue to be able to rep The Culture.

Childish Gambino aka Donald Glover just gave us the incredible Feels Like Summer music video to start the week and at the end announced on stage that his current tour will be his last. Looks like the actor/rapper/producer/writer will be focusing on TV and film from here on out.

At the age of 93, after nearly 60 years in the Hollywood acting game and winning a Tony, 2 Emmys and a Presidential Medal of Freedom, Cicely Tyson will receive and honorary Oscar becoming the first black woman ever to do so. A long overdue and much deserved award for one of the forerunners of black Hollywood.

Actor Geoffrey Owens has gone from being job-shamed to accepting a 10-episode role on Tyler Perry’s Have And gave Nots TV drama on OWN.

Netfilx dropped the trailer for their documentary on music business icon Quincy Jones. The documentary is co-directed by Quincy Jones’ daughter, actress Rashida Jones and is appropriately entitled Quincy.
