Quick Hits: Harriet Tubman and ODB Biopics In The Works, Soul Train TV Drama & More

This week was another busy week in news and accomplishments for many creators for The Culture so here are some quick hits highlighting some of the things you might’ve missed.

 

There’s a Harriet Tubman biopic in the works! To be directed by Kasi Lemmons (Eve’s Bayou) and starring Tony, Emmy, and Grammy award winner Cynthia Erivo. Shooting starts in October and look for the film to come out sometime in 2019.

 

Wu-Tang Clan founding member and hip-hop legend Ol’ Dirty Bastard is getting his own biopic as well. Sony has green-lit the project and Wu-Tnag founder (and ODB’s cousin) The RZA will produce the film and currently he and Sony are on the hunt for a director.

 

More biopic news! Ring King, a film about Rocky Johnson, father of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and a wrestling legend in his own right is currently in development. The movie will tell the story amazing true story of Johnson, a descendant of Black Loyalists who immigrated to Nova Scotia after the American Revolution.

 

BET is working on a scripted TV series based on Soul Train entitled American Soul. Sinqua Walls of The Breaks and Power fame has been tapped to star as Don Cornelius. The show will take viewers behind the scenes of the show and the lives of the makers of one of the seminal programs that helped put The Culture on the map.

 

Netflix has picked up the film Lionheart directed by Nigerian actress, producer, director and Africa Movie Academy Award winner Genevieve Nnaji and it will become the first Nigerian Netflix original film.
