BlacKKKlansman Signals The Return Of Spike Lee
Famed creator for The Culture Spike Lee is officially back. This past weekend Lee’s latest film BlacKKKlansman had the biggest opening for the director in 10 years making $10.8 million. BlacKKKlansman is the incredible yet true story of Ron Stallworth a black detective in Colorado Springs in 70’s who managed to dupe the kkk into believing he was white and infiltrating the hate group to help bring it down.
The film stars John David Washington (son of the legendary Denzel Washington) and Adam Driver (known for his role as Kylo Ren in the latest Star Wars films) as Washington’s partner in the deception who actually meets with the klan face to face. The film is also proclaimed by Jordan Peele. It has received universal acclaim for being hard hitting, emotional, funny, and above all thought provoking. Due in large part to Spike Lee’s excellent directing. It has his trademark style of shooting and his strong sense of social commentary so it’s definitely a Spike Lee Joint. It won the Grand Prix award at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 97% Lee’s highest ever.
With many #CultureClassics from Do The Right Thing to Malcom X already in his extensive catalog, BlacKKKlansman is certainly an excellent addition and overall, it’s a welcomed return to form for one of The Culture’s greatest directors.
