The $100 Million Dollar Black Director’s Club 2018
This past weekend The Equalizer 2 starring Denzel Washington crossed the $100 million dollar mark at the box office. This means director Antoine Fuqa joins the $100 Million Dollar Black Director’s Club for 2018. He joins fellow creators for The Culture Ryan Coogler director of the mega-hit Black Panther which has grossed an astonishing 1.3 billion worldwide and Ava DuVernay who became the first black female to direct a film with an $100 million budget with A Wrinkle In Time which has $132 million grossed worldwide.
The Equalizer 2’s success shouldn’t come as much of a surprise considering the first film grossed over $192 million but overall this is an amazing feat for black directors and continues the incredible roll black creatives are having in Hollywood this year. Historical Oscar and Golden Globe wins by the likes of Jordan Peele and Sterling K. Martin and Black Panther becoming one of the top 10 higher grossing films of all-time and the week in March when there were three black-directed films in the box-office top 10 at the same time (Coogler, DuVernay, and Tyler Perry). And with Steve McQueen’s Widows starring Viola Davis and Creed II directed by Steven Caple Jr both releasing this holiday season we might be able to add one or two more director’s to this illustrious list by year’s end.
