Quick Hits – Black Panther Cartoon, John Legend’s Christmas Film, Tamron Hall Returns To TV
This week was another busy week in news and accomplishments for many creators for The Culture so here are some quick hits highlighting some of the things you might’ve missed.
Marvel’s Avengers: Black Panther’s Quest, a brand new Black Panther cartoon debuted this week on DisneyXD with a lot of black creatives behind it. Voice actors include James Mathis III as T’Challa and Daisy Lightfoot as Shuri, show runner Geoff Thorne and a writing team lead by Brandon Easton. We’re always here for more Black Panther goodness and check out the trailer below:
Singer and recent EGOT recipient John Legend continues to make moves as a Hollywood producer as he and his biz partner Mike Jackson collab with Netflix to produce the holiday film Jingle Jangle. Described as “A cobblestone world comes to life in the event holiday musical tale of an embattled toymaker, his precocious granddaughter, and a magical invention, that if they can get it to work in time for the holidays, could change their lives forever.” First Sunday and Almost Christmas director David E. Talbert will direct and co-produce the film as well.
Former Today show co-host, Tamron Hall will be returning to TV with her very own daytime talk show on ABC in 2019. “I’m thrilled to partner with the ABC Owned Television Stations Group to bring our show — which will aim to showcase real joy and laughter, as well as inspiration in the face of adversity — to audiences across the country,” Tamron said. She’s being a bit coy with specifics on the show but a talented, smart, and compassionate woman of color back on TV is certainly a good thing.
And finally, in one of the most random yet coolest bits of news we’ve come across in a while, NBA Hall-of-Famer Kareem Abdul Jabbar has been announced as part of the writing team for the new version of the Veronica Mars TV show. Yes the 71-year-old basketball legend, will be a writer on the Veronica Mars reboot. Jabbar has been in Hollywood on the low for a while but this is still a bit of a surprise. It will certainly be interesting to see what he can bring creatively to the show.
