Quick Hits: Common Inks A Deal, Zendaya The Little Mermaid, Black Bewitched and More
We’ve got a bite-sized recap of this week’s news on creators out here making moves for The Culture.
This week rapper, actor, producer and activist Common inked a major deal with Lionsgate TV to develop new television projects under their banner. It’s great news because Common is all about pushing The Culture forward and the more representation we get on TV and in film the better.
And speaking of representation on screen, it’s been rumored this week that Zendaya has been offered the lead role of Ariel in Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. If that comes to fruition it would be a great look for The Culture having another woman of color added to the iconic Disney princess lineup.
A Bewitched reboot looks to becoming to ABC produced by two of the top black TV producers and with a black female lead. Kenya Barris and Yamara Taylor the dynamic duo behind Black-ish have written the script and with the green light from ABC look for it to put a spell on viewers (see what I did there?) very soon
In a major coup for Netflix, the streaming company was able to snag Tendo Nagenda who worked on Queen of Katwe, A Wrinkle in Time and the upcoming live-action versions of Dumbo and Mulan. Netflix is looking to expand deeper into the film side of things and get more diverse and signing up Nagenda accomplishes both goals in one move.
