John Legend Makes History As First Black Man To Achieve EGOT Status
This week John Legend truly went legend for The Culture when he became the youngest person and first black man ever to achieve EGOT status. On Sunday Legend won his first Emmy for producing Jesus Christ Superstar to seal the deal. What’s EGOT status? It’s when an artist wins an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. He has 10 Grammys, won his Oscar for Best Original Song for his “Glory” collab with Common in 2015, and won his Tony in 2017 for “Jitney”.
Legend is now the 16th person to achieve an EGOT and joins legends like Audrey Hepburn, Mel Brooks, and Andrew Lloyd Webber among others. Whoopi Goldberg is the only other African-American on this EGOT list with Quincy Jones one Oscar win short of joining them. Big ups to John Legend for this amazing accomplishment and being of the The Culture’s top creators and representers.
