Culture Classics – The Malcom X Movie

#RunTheCulture

As the revolution is approaching, we want to feature one of the most pro-black and political engaged #CultureClassics in The Culture’s film vault, the Malcom X movie.

malcolm x best black biopic

One of the greatest black autobiographies (written by Alex Haley) turned into a biographical epic of the controversial and influential Black Nationalist leader portrayed brilliantly by Denzel Washington. Released in 1992 and directed by Spike Lee, the film spans much of Malcom X’s life. From his early days as a small-time gangster, to his profound spiritual awakening and religious coversion, to his ministry as a member of the Nation of Islam.

Some of director Spike Lee’s best work went into this sprawling story. Excellent cinematography with a great score that keeps the audience engaged throughout. Intillgent, charismatic, conflicted and constantly evolving, Denzel Washington captured this complex man and his complex life masterfully. One of several Oscars stolen from Denzel.

Malcom X’s life journey, his goal to unite his people, and his eventual martyrdom all hold valuable lessons for today’s African-American community that will hopefully encourage people to do more research on this incredible figure and even motivate the next leaders of The Culture.

We hope you enjoyed reading about the Malcom X Movie. Check out some of our other articles:
