Quick Hits – NYCC Edition w/ Common, Erika Alexander, & Valiant Comics

New York Comic Con 2018 took place this week and The Culture represented strong. Here are some quick hits highlighting some of the news and accomplishments black creators made happen at NYCC this week.

Rapper, actor, activist, etc. Common and his team made history as the graphic novel he stars in, Caster became the first comic book ever to get its own musical score. The digital graphic novel (which launched Oct. 4 at NYCC) features music by Grammy award-winning artist Robert Glasper. Another great example of The Culture putting it’s own spin on a traditional medium and making it something fresh and new.

Actress and comic book creator Erika Alexander announced during Con week that she will be joining the cast of the WB’s superhero show Black Lightning. Alexander will play Perenna, a therapist with telepathic abilities that works with Jennifer (series co-star China Anne McClain) to help her handle her manifesting powers and the complex bundle of emotions they stir up. A good look for Alexander as she delves deep into comics and ads to her blerd cred.

Valiant Comics has announced that Karl Bollers has been promoted to Senior Editor. Bollers has more than 20 years of experience in all facets of the comics industry including a run as Associate Editor and Assistant Editor at Marvel Entertainment and as a writer on books like including Emma Frost, Cable, Sonic the Hedgehog )for which he served as both writer and colorist) and New Paradigm’s nominated Watson and Holmes series for which he earned a 2014 Eisner Award nomination for “Best New Series. Bollers will play an increased role in the development of new projects, casting of comic talent, and editing of current and upcoming titles a major position for an African-American in the comic book industry.
