“This Is How We Do It” by Montell Jordan – CULTURE CLASSICS
#RunTheCulture
“This Is How We Do It” by Montell Jordan is one of the seminal party anthems of the 90’s. Released in February of 1995, the song was the debut single for Jordan.
The song is a party anthem describing how parties get started on the West Coast. Jordan co-wrote and co-produced the song with writer/producer Oji Pierce as a love letter to his hometown and weekend parties of his youth. It features Jordan singing and rapping over a sample of Slick Rick’s “Children’s Story” (which in itself samples Bob James’ “Nautilus”). The throwback sample and the songs infectious, call and response hook got parties started from LA to NYC.
Calling it a smash is an understatement. “This Is How We Do It” peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on April 15, 1995, rising from number six the previous week and displacing Madonna from the top spot. It then remained at number one for seven straight weeks. It was also number one for seven weeks on the R&B singles chart. The single sold over one million copies earning a platinum certification from the RIAA. To this day it has over 134 million views on YouTube and has been streamed nearly 200 million times on Spotify. The song also earned Jordan a Grammy Award nomination for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance in 1996.
“This Is How We Do It” has been sampled, remixed, and used on countless TV shows, movies, and commercials, and is instantly recognizable as soon as its beat drops. Truly a timeless #CultureClassic.
