MUSIC MONDAYS – Mahalia
#RunTheCulture
Hailing from the United Kingdom, this week we go international for #MusicMonday and present the singer and actress Mahalia.
At the age of 22, Mahalia is young in life but a veteran in the music biz. She was only 12 when she started playing guitar and singing at open mics in her hometown of Leicester. A year later she was signed to Atlantic Records, and the grind began.
Life in the entertainment industry has been up and down for Mahalia however. She’s done shows with an up-and-coming Ed Sheeran and landed a role part in the 2016 film Brotherhood. She’s been in the studio with the producer who made Drake’s “Hotline Bling” and released three projects so far, a couple of EPs and an album, Diary Of Me in 2016. But she is just now starting to emerge as a potential R&B star. The 2018 video performance of her drunk-dial bop “Sober” on the YouTube channel Colors, on which rising artists sing against a brightly-hued backdrop went viral and has racked up more than 28 million views.
Initially it was a struggle but her perseverance has finally started to pay off. Now in her 8th year in the game, Mahalia has toured through the UK and had recently embarked on her first tour in the States teaming up with soulful peer Jorja Smith. Musically, she’s neo-soul lyrically mixed with contemporary R&B production and now that her melodic slow jams have finally found their audience, you can look forward to hearing a lot more from this talented creator for The Culture from across the pond.
We hope you enjoyed our article on Mahalia. Check out more of our musical content:
